In this excerpt from Gibson TV’s Icons with Noel Gallagher of Oasis and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Noel talks about how Oasis had to adjust from playing theaters to football stadiums in the UK shortly after their album ‘(What’s The Story) Morning Glory? ‘ was released on October 2nd 1995.
For those who may be unaware, the Oasis performances at Maine Road stadium and Knebworth in 1996 are acclaimed as some of the most iconic moments in both the Britpop era and UK music history.
Watch Noel talk about how having been a Manchester City fan all his life, it was a dream come true when Oasis headlined two shows at the football club’s ground of Maine Road on the weekend of Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th April 1996. Albeit he seemed to not believe he was being asked to play there in front of 40,000 screaming fans.
Fast forward to 10th and 11th of August 1996, when 250,000 Oasis fans saw them take to the stage for two nights at Knebworth, showcasing the band’s meteoric rise and cementing the occasion as a landmark gathering for a generation of young people. Watch as he talks about how he had to adjust to the different stage size, and how he and the band although confident, were not expecting such a rise so quickly!
