Ivan Julian shows us his eclectic collection at Super Giraffe Sound

Join us on an inspiring journey with Ivan Julian, a founding member of 70s punk legends Richard Hell and the Voidoids. This new episode of Show Us Your Junk features Ivan’s studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Super Giraffe Sound.

We had a blast touring Super Giraffe Sound and learning how Ivan got his start in the New York punk scene in the mid to late 70s, and how his long career performing and touring eventually led him to start producing bands and building his own studio.

At 19, Ivan moved to London where he joined the R&B group The Foundations, whom he toured with throughout the U.K. and Europe. In 1977, he came to New York City, where he helped found Richard Hell and the Voidoids. Their debut LP “Blank Generation” is considered a quintessential punk album. After parting ways in 1980 Ivan formed other groups including The Outsets and Lovelies.

Ivan has worked with many other artists throughout his career including The Clash, Matthew Sweet, and has produced records for notable bands such as Hunx and his Punx and The Fleshtones.

Ivan shares his extension knowledge about vintage analog studio gear, and has a knack for tweaking and building his own gear. His eclectic collection and taste align well with his approach to production.

Ivan also discusses his difficult battle with cancer, and how the music community rallied around him and supported his recovery, infusing him with optimism and inspiring him to produce and write as much music as he can.
