In a mix the bass can be tough to pin down. There’s this weird imbalance of energy to audibility, with low frequencies carrying a disproportionate amount of energy while the higher frequencies contribute much of the tone and character. So using multiband compression to tame the low end without ruining your high frequency colour can make a massive difference to the smoothness and power of your final mix.
