The Blue Guitar Collection - The History | ELIXIR Strings

The Blue Guitar Collection represents a snap shot in the history of the handmade guitar. Twenty two archtop instruments created by established talents and relative newcomers at the time – luthiers such as John Monteleone, Linda Manzer, Bob Benedetto, Tom Ribbecke, Kim Walker, Theo Scharpach, and many more contributed masterpiece guitars – all of which were very blue indeed!

The collection – commissioned by Scott Chinery was intended as a tribute to seminal luthier Jimmy D’Aquisto who had made the first Blue Guitar shortly before he passed away in 1995. Today it is regarded by many as one of the most important collections of modern instruments in the world – a milestone in the history of the luthier-made guitar.

Chinery’s original stipulations were simple enough – each guitar was to be a fully acoustic 18" archtop with a rounded cutaway and a 1+7/8" nut width. Aside from that every luthier could treat their guitar as a blank canvas for their creativity. And they did!

As well as some extraordinary aesthetic work The Blue Guitar Collection also features some pioneering examples of soundports and off-set soundholes – from Bob Benedetto’s elegant floral designs to John Monteleone’s sliding doors and Tom Ribbecke’s side-mounted ear trumpet!

The Archtop Foundation depends upon the long-lasting great tone of Elixir Strings for every instrument in The Blue Guitar Collection.
