Academy Of Tone #62: the story of the iconic Marshall JCM 800 with special guest Olli Hartmann!
On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas is joined by guest Olli Hartmann to tell the story of the legendary Marshall JCM 800!
Used by the likes of AC/DC, Gary Moore, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Scorpions, Zakk Wylde, and many, many more, the JCM 800 has been THE hard rock amp for decades now, and its sounds define how we think about the entire genre.
On the show, Thomas explains the concept of this iconic amp, and why it became an icon of the music industry for studio and live work. Olli will demo his two personal favorite JCM 800 amps, and the guys will show how they differ slightly from one another, as well as how they stack up against the AMP1 Mercury and Iridium Editions.
And of course, Thomas also has his own reference amps to bring to the JCM 800 party, in the form of his Reckmeyer-modded 100-watter and his Black Flag model JCM 800 mod.
Another hot topic among JCM 800 aficionados is more gain, and how to get it! The guys are bringing in plenty of devices to maximize their crunch tones using a variety of different guitars, high-output pickups, and boost/overdrive pedals. Axes for the occasion will include the standard Stratocasters, as well as Les Pauls and a Super Strat or two!
