We’re back with another strong EarthQuaker Devices Sessions. For episode 45, we decided to keep it local and highlight Akron’s own eclectic, funky, rockin’ hip hop band Red Rose Panic. The dynamic quintet of lead vocalist and emcee Luminari, guitarist ST1XX, drummer Sledge, bassist Smokeface, and keyboardist Lou On Keys have been recording and performing their ear and brain massaging hybrid sound for 9 years around N.E. Ohio and the country. For their EQD Session, the group gathered at Akron cocktail lounge, The Spotted Owl, for a four-song set mixing songs from their 2018 album Time Attack, their 2013 EP One Night Standard, and a single from 2021.
His pedalboard populated with EQD treats – including the Aqueduct vibrato, the Bit Commander analog octave synth, the Acapulco Gold power amp distortion, the Palisades mega overdrive, and the Astral Destiny modulated octave reverb, ST1XX and company begin their session with a riff-rock flavored instrumental jam. The band then smoothly transitions into the neo-soul groove of their 2021 single Regular Dad, featuring Luminari’s heartfelt lyrical ode to the responsibilities and simple joys of fatherhood. The tempo
picks up from there with the bouncy soul-pop groove of Luminari’s world-weary Been There. Then, for the nearly delicate Change Your Mind, ST1XX kicks on the Astral Destiny to give his reggae-tinged chords a touch of space and modulation to excellent effect.
Next up, it’s time to give the bassist some as the mysterious Smokeface takes several bars to display his melodic four-string prowess before ST1XX takes the mic to croon the hook of the funky vamp of “Hopping Fences.” Real good music, by real good musicians using real good
pedals. Enjoy.
