Academy Of Tone #99: Fender combo killer clean tones and “the” pedal platform amp with Mick Woll!

On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas is once again joined by special guest – and BluGuitar endorser – Mick Woll to dive into the magic of pedal platform amps… especially those in Fender combo format!

This is the first in a series of episodes we plan to do with the classic pedal platform amps: Fender, Vox and Marshall. We’ll show you how these classic amplifiers married together to FX pedals helped create some of the most iconic tones of all time. Thomas is inviting an expert guest for each amp type, and he and the guests will compare the originals to the pedal friendly AMP1!

Mick Woll comes from a musical background. His father played Fender amps, and Mick – who’s a session and touring guitarist and the leader of one of Germany’s most successful functions bands, the Urban Club Band – based his own rig around a clean platform amp in combination with pedals to get his different tones, from jazz to metal.

Over the years, Mick has played almost every great clean pedal platform amp around, and he’s settled on his favorite… he now tours with AMP1! On the show, Mick will show us his approach with amps and how to get the best from the pedals you use with them, and he’ll bring a few of his secret tonal weapons to the show too!

Together, Mick and Thomas will compare some classic vintage Fender amps and the AMP1, combining them with Mick and Thomas’s favorite pedals. Among the gear on show include Thomas’s 1964 Super Reverb Blackface, his modded Twin, his Princeton, and a 1970 Pro Reverb – which, with 60 watts of power and featuring a rectifier tube, is often seen as the perfect pedal platform amp.

The guys also have some pretty cool pedals to plug in. Star of the show will be the super-rare Paul Cochrane Tim, which the guys will compare against the legendary Timmy (also by Paul Cochrane), some classic Tube Screamers, Mick’s other secret weapon, the Henretta Engineering Emerald Prince Preamp, the Lovepedal Englishman, and more.

We’re looking forward to hearing your recommendations on FX pedals to use with AMP1 and other great pedal platform amps too, so leave those in the comments and we’re looking forward to a fun and FX-filled show! Some good clean fun, you might say 😉
