On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas and special guest Manni Zewe continue to look back at the guitar players, tones and riffs that helped shape heavy metal into the beast it has become today!
After AOT 123 (iconic metal riffs of the 80‘s) this is the 2nd show that takes us to iconic riffs of the 90‘s when metal was at the peak of it’s popularity. Some greats from the 80s managed to produce more commercially accessible material, releasing some of the most influential metal albums of all time with Metallica’s self-titled "Black Album", Megadeth’s "Rust in Peace" and Judas Priest’s "Painkiller" in the early 90s.
Metal also went back underground, as grunge pushed it out of the limelight. But metal continued to drive the scene away from the mainstream, diversified and reached a new generation with new trends like the 2nd wave of black metal, Gothenburg death metal, melodic death metal, stoner rock or power metal.
In the mid-90s the relatively short but violent era of nu-metal was ushered and guitars were tuned even lower. The first 7-strings became popular and new high-gain amps (Mesa Rectifier, Peavey 5150) appeared and shaped whole genres. The foundations for later metal trends were laid here by bands like Judas Priest, In Flames, Pantera, Dream Theater and Fear Factory.
Guitarists demanded more gain and tightness with their amplifiers using pedals like the Ibanez tube screamer or Boss OD1 to tighten up their sounds with active EMGs and hot DiMarzio and Seymour Duncan humbuckers.
On the show, Manni will take us through his top riffs, tones and styles from the 90s scene, giving us a bunch of incredible metal riffs from a bunch of the era’s leading bands. The guys will also trade riffs on some jams, and of course they’lI show you how to dial in your AMP1 – be it Mercury or Iridium Edition – to get the best possible heavy metal sounds going!
