Academy Of Tone #75: AMP1 Mercury Edition vs Silver Edition – the evolution of BluGuitar!

On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas and Rich take a deep dive into the history of BluGuitar and its key product: AMP1.

The first AMP1 wasn’t called the Mercury Edition. It wasn’t called the Silver Edition either – it was just AMP1! After this original AMP1 had been on the market for a couple of years, though, Thomas realized he could improve it, tweak it and make it an even better proposition for the legions of guitar players out there who just loved the amp’s concept and practicality, but couldn’t quite find the killer tones they were after.

So, he did just that, and the Mercury Edition was born. For this Mark 2 version, Thomas undertook in-depth research into every facet of the amp, and listened to feedback from literally hundreds of guitar players before beginning the fine-tuning process. Ultimately, though, all four channels of the amp were tweaked to give the tones a little more tightness, clarity and liveliness. The reverb algorithm was improved for richer and more lush results. Recording out options were modified and enhanced.

Even the Master Volume control was changed. Since the power amp in the Mercury has a different current feedback design, Thomas was able to eliminate a switching function that could be used in some other parts of the circuit. This offered up some new options for the switching software of the Mercury, and was used to make the amp even more flexible by offering a low gain mode!

When the Mercury Edition was released, fans who had already purchased the original AMP1 started referring to theirs as the Silver Edition – the name has stuck, and even Thomas uses it now!

From the outside, the Mercury and Silver AMP1s look fairly similar. There’s a few telltale marks that’ll let you know whether you’re holding one or the other, though, and Thomas will explain these during the show.

We’ll also delve into the differences in a big way, showing how the two amps sound different (and yet also similar!), explaining why Thomas made the changes, and discussing the players who swear by both editions. Some players love the Mercury, but some – like Jennifer Batten – simply love their Silver Editions, and don’t feel the need to make the move!

We’ll also take your questions on the two amps, so if there’s something you need to know, ask us in the live chat.
