For a limited time, you can relive the incredible live performance featuring Confluence, a special collaboration between the Akron Symphony Orchestra and EarthQuaker Devices. Confluence is co-composed by Jon Sonnenberg, a long-time EarthQuaker artist and collaborator, and Jake Gunnar Walsh, a New York-based composer and oboist. During this performance, 13 of the 82 orchestral instruments on stage are run through a variety of EQD pedals controlled by Jon Sonnenberg, opening up an entirely new sonic palette for the audience to experience.

Jon Sonnenberg invented an instrument specifically for this piece, aptly called a “confluence harp,” which combines the resonance of chimes and suspended strings. This instrument was built in part to expand the range of the standard 12-tone Western scale, bringing interesting microtonal frequency characteristics to fulfill Jon’s vision for the piece.

“When you strike the chimes, you have these sympathetic vibrations happening from the strings, and you’re hitting a more complex body than just a string vibration or a chime vibration. It’s really a confluence of the two worlds,” Sonnenberg says. (“EarthQuaker Symphony creates a confluence of classical and electronic music,” Ideastream, March 3rd, 2022)

This performance took place on Saturday, March 5th, 2022 at E.J. Thomas Hall in Akron, Ohio.
