Derek Jones Bass Guitar Lesson – Tapping Techniques | ELIXIR Strings

If the word “tapping” only brings to mind six-string super-shredders or bass virtuosos like Billy Sheehan or Dream Theater’s John Myung, then this is the video for you! On bass, the technique has applications far beyond “stunt guitar” and is a great tool to create distinctive basslines. Used creatively, tapping can be used to mimic bubbling synth-bass style feels that fit well in pop and electronic music.

In this bass guitar video lesson, Elixir Strings artist Derek Jones shows how to start working on your tapping technique. He starts out by playing the same note on two different strings in a cool 5/4 groove, really capturing that “synth-like” feel and demonstrating the kind of vibe you can create even with simple patterns. Derek also shows the importance of controlling dynamics and aiming to get the volume of each note equal. Of course, once you get the tapping basics down, you can develop the technique as far as you like!
Derek has been playing Elixir Bass Strings for over 20 years for the consistency of tone, feel and long tone life. Check them out: https://www.elixirstrings.com/guitar-strings#bass
