At EarthQuaker Devices, we prefer to look forward when it comes to our pedals. But sometimes, we have to take a moment to acknowledge how much our past has enriched our present. This Afterneath Retrospective film is a labor of love that we offer to all pedalheads perusing the YouTubeverse, especially our loyal EQD fans.
The Afterneath is EQD’s "Enhanced Otherworldly Reverberator," which is a fancy way of saying it’s a really cool, weird, and unique reverb pedal! When it was released in 2014, thousands of reverb variants were already present on the pedal market. But as you will hear from the many artists, producers, and musicians in this retrospective, none of those quality pedals have been able to give creative folks what the Afterneath offers.
Learn about the "happy accident" EQD lead designer Jamie Stillman discovered while messing around with some code that started out labeled as simply "Big Reverb" before eventually being expanded and refined into our beloved Afterneath.
Hear reminiscences from longtime EQD employees about how the popularity of the Afterneath helped raise EarthQuaker’s profile and burnish our reputation for creating unique pedals in the industry and among players.
Meet EQD artist Matt Horak (whose talents we share with Marvel Comics and other publications), the man behind the iconic wizard and cave graphic that serves as a perfect visual encapsulation of the sonic qualities of the Afterneath.
And, with the latest V3, featuring the mode knob and a CV/expression pedal jack, there are even more sonic possibilities for folks to explore. You can dive directly into some cavernous reverberating chaos or make a relaxing sonic bed of gently undulating waves of notes, chords and sounds or any and all points in between.
We’ve also gathered an array of artists, producers, and sound sculptors, including Nels Cline, Arianna Powell, Robin Finck, Yvette Young of Covet, The Pedal Zone’s Stefan Fast, producers Dave Pensado and Joe Barresi, adventurous harpist Lara Somogyi and others to talk about their love of the Afterneath pedal and its Eurorack counterpart and demonstrate how it gets their creative juices flowing.
Oh, and we also got a real Wizard!
Though we’re a humble cluster of hardworking sentient bipeds at EQDHQ, we are pretty darn proud of this mysterious and versatile little reverb box. The Afterneath has been embraced by musicians and creatives of all genres and players of all instruments. Throughout its eight years and two upgrades, the Afterneath is still sending music makers down new musical paths for exploration, and that is as inspiring to us as the Afterneath has been to others.
As our good buddy Robin Finck, longtime guitarist for Nine Inch Nails, succinctly said.
"EarthQuaker Devices and reverb..what could be bad about that? Add to that your best cave of forgotten dreams graphic, and we all win."
