How Big Data and Continuous Monitoring Can Improve Our Health

In the latest episode of HARMAN’s interview series “The Next Wave,” HARMAN Chairman Young Sohn speaks with Michael Snyder, Ph.D. – Chair of Stanford School of Medicine’s Department of Genetics. They discuss Dr. Snyder’s work at his namesake Snyder Lab at Stanford, companies he’s founded and spun out from the lab, and how we can make our healthcare system better. According to Dr. Snyder, our healthcare system is broken; instead of taking a reactionary approach to our health, he suggests to Young that we need to take a more active approach – monitoring our health daily to see spikes in glucose, temperature and heartrate to understand when a body may be approaching, or already is, in distress. Wearables are key to the type of continuous monitoring that Dr. Snyder suggests, but we must also analyze that data and offer actionable steps to take next. He practices what he preaches as well, wearing seven wearable health monitors during the interview.

An accomplished academic, author and researcher, Dr. Snyder has founded 14 startups in the healthtech space – including January AI, Q Bio, Personalis and more. Dr. Snyder received his Ph.D. training at the California Institute of Technology and carried out postdoctoral training at Stanford University. Dr. Snyder combined different state-of-the-art "omics" technologies to perform the first longitudinal detailed integrative personal omics profile (iPOP) of person and used this to assess disease risk and monitor disease states for personalized medicine. He is the cofounder of Personalis, SensOmics, Qbio @qbioinc, January AI, Filtricine, Mirvie, Protos, Protometrix (now part of Thermo-Fisher), and Affomix (now part of Illumina). Dr. Snyder presently serves on the board of a number of companies, and is the author of the book: ‘Genomics and Personalized Medicine: What Everyone Needs to Know’. His academic honors include the George Beadle Award, Pioneeer Award and being named a Stanford B. Ascherman Professor.
