In this Fender Play LIVE clip, host Eugene Edwards chats with special guest, Dr. Molly Miller about the versatility of chord voicings for the G, C, and D major chords. As three of the essential chords that beginner guitarists should have in their repertoire, the C, G, and D chords are among some of the easiest to play in the open position, but learning to play them using CAGED shapes can unlock a whole new world of voicings, playing them in higher octaves at different points on the neck of your guitar. Dr. Miller shows you some of the possibilities for fresh chord voicings for these major chords, and how CAGED shapes can help you to better visualize the fretboard and use it to map out or improvise solos. Riffing on this same concept, host Eugene Edwards illustrates how the CAGED system makes it easier to play the melody to a surf version of the holiday classic, “Frosty the Snowman” using different voicings of the G, C, and D chords and Dr. Miller shoes this same concept applied to “You Are My Sunshine.”
