Hey EarthQuaker friends!
It’s time for another episode of This Old Bench. We’re looking back into time to bask in the warm glow of nostalgia and look at some of the early and rare pedals upon which EarthQuaker Devices was built. For episode 4, our congenial host Justin looks at one of the original versions of The Hoof, one of EQD’s most popular pedals. This pedal is so old the circuit board was hand-etched, populated, and wired by founder, president Jamie Stillman and was among the first Hoof’s ever sold commercially.
Also, for this episode, Justin is joined in the basement by a surprise guest; Jamie’ effin’ Stillman! The pair of gray-bearded guitarists marvel at this oldest-school Hoof’s surprisingly high gain as Jamie shreds jams on a Jazzmaster.
Jamie also recalls that the pedal was made “before anybody joined the team. It was just me rotting away by myself, smoking cigarettes in my basement.”
Jamie also notes that the pedal may be one of only “five or six” produced without the familiar cloven hoof graphic, only text. Finally, for the hardcore pedal nerds, he also reveals a secret about the origins of the Hoof circuit.
So please enjoy this wistful reminiscence and look at an original Hoof, a.k.a. “The pedal that kind of started the whole company.”
