On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas is joined by special guest Uwe Jolly to dive deep into the wonderful world of the Fender Telecaster!
As the first mass-produced and commercially successful electric guitar, the Telecaster – along with its sister model, the Esquire – has been a dominant for in guitar-based music for over 70 years. And, finally in 2022, Thomas has given in and bought one 😉
As a devoted Strat player, Thomas had never found a Tele that vibed with him in the right way – until he met his new ’67 squeeze on the trip to Los Angeles for the 2022 NAMM Show and the launch of the AMPX! Thomas will tell the story of how he bought the guitar from a close friend over there, how he shipped it home, and how he is now getting along as a vintage Telecaster owner for the first time.
Uwe Jolly is the perfect guest for this episode of Academy of Tone – a guitar player from southwest Germany, Uwe is also a Tele fanatic, owning a very similar model to Thomas’s new 1967 axe, and on the show he will tell Thomas what he has been missing out on over the past 30 years. The guys will also have an original ’53 Blackguard Telecaster – one of the holy grails of the guitar world – to test out against their ’60s models, and they’ll see how the AMP1 models handle them. Oh, and a fun exercise will also see Thomas trying to get his Start to sound as close to a Telecaster as possible!
Of course, this is also the time to reminisce about all the legendary players, songs and riffs connected to the Telecaster – and believe us, it’s not just a country guitar! Famous Tele players over the years include Keith Richards, Bruce Springsteen, Andy Summers of The Police, Jerry Donahue, Graham Coxon of Blur, Jeff Buckley, James Burton, Danny Gatton, Slipknot’s Jim Root, Francis Rossi of Status Quo, and many, many more.
