We have been asked a lot wich AMP1 would do a better JCM800? The answer is quite simple: it depends on what you are looking for. As those classic Marshall heads are varying a quite a bit too, they show different characters that have their own qualities. Also they are being used as a platform for hot rods and pedals to perfect the tone, resulting in a wide sound spectrum from Classic Rock up to (hair)metal.
Currently we got Euge VALOVIRTA’s “Bad boy“ in the studio, so Thomas is comparing this extremely vibrant, alive and mean sounding JCM 800 against the BluGuitar AMP1 Mercury and Iridium Edition. Also Thomas will show us his 1968 “black flag” 100watts Plexi with a 800 mod, that is rather bluesy , woody and warm – pure and as the “Bad Boy” in the combination with pedals like SD1, OD1, Tube Screamer and other classic boosters and overdrives that are known to be secret weapons. We’ll hear the different JCM800’s vs. the different AMP1 variations.
While Mercury has got the bluesier and warmer roots, iridium is tighter, faster and a bit more brutal. Thomas is comparing the 2 hottest amp in a pedal pedals new Soldano SLO pedal and Friedman’s BE-OD with the real deal amps in his switching setup.
In the second part of this episode Thomas interviews Marzi Montazeri from Heavy as Texas and Exhorder – a very interesting artist from Huston, Texas with an even more exciting history. Immigrated with his parents from Iran in the 80’s he got the full American rock socialization seeing Van Halen live many times and experiencing a lot of great music from all around the world including those for him local hot acts like zztop and Eric Johnson. Also he’ll tell us the story how AMP1 iridium edition became his new favorite amp plus giving us a great demo of his AMP1 pedalboard.
