On this week’s, Academy Of Tone, Thomas and his very special guest Max Carton @Max Carton Guitar are doing the most detailed look yet into the genre-defining tones of AC/DC and its iconic guitarists: Angus and Malcolm Young! Max is an AC/DC devotee – he plays the part of Angus Young in one of Belgium’s leading AC/DC tribute bands and his collection of AC/DC-related gear and his pursuit of those hallowed Young tones are already the stuff of legend on YouTube! Now he’s bringing his collection (which includes an AMP1 Mercury Edition, of course!) to Saarbrücken for him and Thomas to put it all through its paces and get as close to the originals as they can.
Thomas will plug in his vintage Marshalls, a series of boutique tube amps and AMP1, different speakers, and a few secret weapons as the guys discuss the original gear used on the AC/DC albums, what the differences are in tone, and how to re-create those iconic tones – perhaps the purest rock and roll guitar sounds in the history of music – with different gear.
Max talks about his favorite tones from the best AC/DC recording eras, as well as live tones – plus, how to get all those tone with AMP1. The key periods and gear sets Max will discuss are:
1974 – 1977 ‘Early years’: Marshall Superlead + Celestion G12m 75hz/55hz Greenback and Blackback speakers + Gibson SG with T TOP pickups
1978 – 1981 ‘Golden Years’: Marshall Superlead / Marshall JTM50 + Schaffer wireless boost + Celestion G12-65 (T3120 1777) speakers (mics: MD421 + SM57 or Neumann u47/87/67 bib) + Gibson SG with T TOP pickups
1991 – 2008 ‘Comeback years’: JTM45 + Celestion G12m 75hz Greenbacks

And it’s going to get deep too, as the guys delve into the nerdiest of AC/DC tone hunting topics: string thickness, playing style, speakers, pickups, the Schaffer replica, and live attitude!
That also means this episode is going to feature a bunch of cool guitars we’ve never had on Academy of Tone before – as well as a bunch of incredible foot-tapping, headbanging AC/DC riffs.
