On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas is joined by special guest Bernd Meiser – known in the business as Mr. Treble Booster! – to dive into that special and underrated effect… yes, it’s the treble booster!
Bernd is a highly acclaimed and respected pedal and guitar amp designer – his own brand, BSM, offers around 50 different treble booster effects, and more – and he’s also a respected journalist and writer on all things guitar and tech related, having being a columnist for German magazines like “Gitarre & Bass” and “Effektiv” for over 20 years.
He’s also an honorary member at GITECH, an association led by Prof. Manfred Zollner from university of Regensburg, Germany, which explores the technological backgrounds of guitar amps and effects.
Thomas is a huge fan of Bernd’s work, using Bernd’s Studio75 and RPA Major treble boosters, and of course many other legendary guitar sounds have been crafted with these effects over the years – most significantly in the 60s and 70s. Players like Ritchie Blackmore, Rory Gallagher, Brian May, Toni Iommi, Eric Clapton and David Gilmour are just a few of the names to have used treble boosters and hi-pass filters to coax iconic tones from their rigs.
The guys have an enviable collection of pedals to show and hear on the show, and Bernd will be bringing some of his most unique and collectable pieces. Among them will be his 71/73, his Hornby Skewes HS-S Master (Ritchie Blackmore’s MK2 booster for many years), and the Galaxi 1011, the re-creation of the Aiwa tape input stage the Blackmore also used for years.
Treble boosters are also incredible in combination with – and as replacements for – fuzz pedals, so Thomas has his Tone Bender, Maestro, Marshall and Jen fuzzes on hand to create some truly massive tones!
Together, Thomas and Bernd will explain the history and technical background of these iconic historical pedals, and there will be playing demos aplenty with AMP1 and a number of other classic tube amps from Thomas’s collection!
