On this week’s Academy of Tone, Thomas and Rich look back on a very special year in Thomas’s life – 1997. This year, now a quarter of a century ago, was a hugely exciting and productive one for Thomas, with giant tours, original album releases, session work for German music legends and more!
Perhaps the biggest event of the year was Thomas’s touring gig as the guitar player in the massively successful German band Tic Tac Toe with whom he toured as support to King if Pop Michael Jackson in stadiums around Germany. Thomas already talked about this a little during Academy Of Tone 96 with Ali Neander, but we got such great feedback about it that he’s going to go into even more detail this time!
So, the guys will discuss how Thomas felt playing to 120,000 people a night (these were Michael Jackson’s biggest ever shows!), the logistics of taking part in such a tour, and of course, the funniest repeatable stories!
Tic Tac Toe might not have had global success (they rapped and sang in German, after all) but they were a huge deal in the late 90s. They spent 7 weeks at number one on the German charts with their song Warum? (in English, Why?), had three top 10 hits in the space of the year (including another two-week number one!), and sold over 6 million records in total. They were an edgy, confrontational band too, and it all ended acrimoniously – they ended up fighting their record label in court to get the money they were owed.
On the show, Thomas will go through the rig he used back in 1997 for his Tic Tac Toe work. Built around a Hughes & Kettner TriAmp MK1, his setup also featured an Alesis Quadraverb, a Rocktron All Access MIDI controller, and a George Dennis Wah Pedal.
But 1997 was also about Thomas’s own creative output. That year, he released his second solo album, Electric Gallery, as well as the debut album with his German-language band DREIST. On top of all that, he still found time to do session work with the legendary German star Uwe Ochsenknecht on the album O-Ton. Thomas has plenty of stories to tell about this time, and that’s exactly what he’ll do, discussing his gear of the time, fame, media, TV, scandals, and many interesting and funny insights into the life of a pro… so come and join us for the fun, and let us know YOUR best memories of 1997 in the chat!
