On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas is joined by special guest Fabian Ratsak to take a deep – and sometimes critical – dive into Joe Bonamassa and his career to date. Together, Thomas and Fabian will explore how Joe has slowly but steadily become one of the guitar world’s most celebrated performers, players and collectors, examining his style, licks, techniques, gear, and his overall role in the business.
Everyone watching Academy of Tone will know Joe Bonamassa – he’s heralded as a modern-day blues titan, son of a guitar store owner, a player who’s helping keep the electric guitar relevant, and an insatiable gear collector. He’s also clearly a product of the modern-day industry, where you make your own hype, market yourself as best you can, and take your musical inspiration from the masters who came before.
On the show, Thomas and Fabian will look into all these things, starting with the most important factor – the music. Joe’s roots stem from blues greats like Albert King, Freddie King, BB King, Eric Johnson, Gary Moore, Eric Clapton, Peter Green, and more, and you can hear all of these players in Joe’s style (many of whom he’s personally played with). The guys will look at the key licks and riffs needed to succeed in this style, and examine how Joe has made some of them his own.
Gear is also a key part of the overall package, and Joe Bonamassa is known for having a massive – and massively expensive – a collection of vintage guitars, amps, pedals and more, including a number of legendary Gibson 1959 Les Pauls, which live in Joe’s Nerdville museum. Thankfully, Joe is someone who buys his guitars to actually play them, and the iconic axes tend to accompany him on world tours – which is part of the act and the reason for going to a Bonamassa gig!
And as well as all the vintage kit, Joe has also had multiple deals and signature products over the years with the likes of Gibson, Epiphone, Jim Dunlop, and more. The guys will look at the Bonamassa collection, and discuss how it’s helped elevate his position in the industry.
What Bonamassa has also done incredibly well over the years is package himself as a genuine blues rock hero in the vein of his heroes. There are other factors too, from the clothes Joe himself wears to the mind-boggling merchandise store he operates, selling everything from t-shirts to miniature guitars to towels to ornaments and more. It’s all part of a bigger plan, and that’s what Thomas and Fabian will be discussing in detail on the show, along with playing lots of music too – it’s going to be a fun one!
In the second half of the show, Thomas shares an interview with Brazilian guitarist – and BluGuitar endorser – Kleber K Shima! A top player and a fixture of the Brazilian industry for years, Kleber K Shima is also a builder of incredible pedalboards (you’ll have seen many feature on the BluGuitar Instagram page!) and he and Thomas will discuss it all in a nice, informal setting – so stick around to enjoy the chat.
