His career spans multiple decades and performances with some pretty damn good artists such as Paul Stanley, Madonna, Chaka Kan, Natalie Cole, Vanessa Carlton, Miley Cyrus, Poe and many, many more. Nate is a monster player that know’s exactly how to match the playing for the song element with his own unique and powerful creative voice…no pun intended. This was such a fun conversation and we talked for HOURS so this is a very condensed version for the sake of focus, but I guarantee you will be hearing more of our chats in future episodes. #46: understanding the AMP1 custom controls! PLUS playing with an orchestra, Thomas Blug style: On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas and Rich look in detail at the Custom Controls on AMP1 Mercury Edition and Iridium Edition. What do the Custom Controls actually do? What was Thomas’s philosophy behind the concept? Why are the Classic settings different on the Mercury and Iridium amps? And how are the Custom Controls different from standard tone controls? We’ll answer all that and more, take your questions and Thomas will A/B the AMP1 Custom Controls against the tone control options on some other classic and modern amps!
Plus, Thomas shares his experiences on playing with a full orchestra, a feat he’s pulled off on numerous occasions now! We’ll be joined for this segment by Martin Hennecke, who’s a percussionist and member of the orchestra board for the Saarländisches Staatsorchester and member of the acclaimed Percussion Under Construction ensemble. So Martin also has first-hand of being in the orchestra and working directly with Thomas on these projects.
Together with Martin, we’ll discuss the behind the scenes work that goes into such a project, the unique challenges it brings, the various arrangements and instrumentations, and how it is for a rock guitarist to work in tandem with a conductor and the head of a classical orchestra! Don’t miss it!

This stunning line of guitars is the culmination of years of R&D that allows us to produce custom style instruments from amazing tone woods with a truly radiant vibe. Artist Elite look amazing, sound rich and offer a level of fit and finish rarely attainable at such price points.
The AGE95CESHB is a beautifully developed Grand Auditorium with quite a rare and inspired pairing of tone woods. It’s AA North Western Red Cedar top and Macassar Ebony body gives this guitar a really warm and open voicing with darker trebles and clear bass. Aesthetically the guitar is stunning with a lighter shade of our standard Shadowburst carefully crafted to let the grain of the wood stay visible right to the edge, where it is met with Ebony binding. This is a really great guitar with a true character to its sound and looks exceptional.
After 50 years of making guitars, continual improvement through the use of emerging technologies, processes, and materials is still at the heart of our culture. Alvarez guitars are constructed correctly in every sense from raw material preparation to construction and manufacturing processes. Our tone woods are carefully cured; our components such as neck blocks and wood joints are carefully designed. The painting, sanding and polishing techniques we use are continually researched and developed, and our tone is impeccably crafted and married to a stable, designed and lively sound box.
The term “solid top” of course refers to the soundboard of an acoustic guitar being made of solid wood, rather than being laminated. However, just because the top is solid, it does not necessarily mean the sound automatically benefits from this feature. The tone of the instrument only improves significantly when the whole guitar is built correctly to optimize the energy a solid soundboard can generate. Artist Series is built to do exactly this.
Each model is designed to get the best out of its components, and for them to work together to produce balance, lively projection and great response. These components include bracing architecture that is specifically designed for each body shape or tonal requirement. Our Bi-level bridge is designed to heighten string tension and improve sustain and response. Real bone nut and saddle, premium tone woods and our crafted attenuated finish all further the quality of construction a positively impact the performance of the instrument.
