Most of you might not immediately associate stomp boxes with symphonic instruments. We say: WHY NOT? It is our pleasure to combine forces with the mighty Akron Symphony Orchestra to bring you ‘ASO Goes Electric’. Kicking off this series is violinist Sam Petrey with sinister renditions of “Allemande from D minor Partita no. 2” and “Perpetuum Mobile”. Afterneath and Arpanoid provide a deep atmosphere that most mortals can’t handle, and when he engages the boost on Palisades – watch out! Watch out means crank your stereo btw. We told you Arpanoid doesn’t have to be all crazy… see? If these classic EarthQuaker pedals can be appropriate and fun for this situation, just think of the possibilities. Remember: before “shredding”, there was this!

A native of Cleveland, Sam Petrey is a member of the 1st Violin Section in the Akron Symphony Orchestra. Recent notable performances with other ensembles include collaborations with Yo-Yo Ma, members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, members of the Cleveland Orchestra, the Silk Road Ensemble and Eighth Blackbird. Sam is also a member of the 1st Violin Section of the Charlottesville Opera where he also holds the position of Principal Guitar.

Sam recently toured extensively across North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand while performing more than 250 chamber music concerts. Sam holds a Master’s of Music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Axel Strauss, and a Performance Certificate from DePaul University, where he studied with Ilya Kaler.

When he’s not fiddling away, Sam enjoys cooking, running, and playing guitar in multiple heavy metal and ska projects.

We’re celebrating 50 episodes of Academy Of Tone! On this week’s episode, Thomas is back in Hamburg, Germany, at the iconic No.1 Guitar Center with two very special guests: Lasse Lammert and Nils Finkeisen.

Lasse Lammert is one of Germany’s top metal producers and is renowned for his pioneering work with impulse responses and for his pro level Kemper profiles. He’s worked in the studio with the likes of Alestorm, Gloryhammer and Godsnake (among hundreds of others) and he’s also a killer guitar player and musician in his own right.

Nils Finkeisen plays guitars in Die Krupps, one of Germany’s leading industrial metal bands, and is also Editor at Gitarre & Bass magazine, one of the leading European guitar publications.

Together, Thomas, Lasse and Nils will talk all things guitar and the current state of the music industry, with a focus on metal (hardly a surprise given Lasse and Nils’ backgrounds!). Lasse is bringing his Diezel VH4 with him to A/B against the AMP1 Iridium Edition, and the guys are at No. 1 Guitar Center, don’t forget – so there will be plenty of other special gear options for the show!
