Remix Track Breakdown – Ryan Remixes Mattias' Combinator Song!

Learn more about Reason:
www.reasonstudios.com

Last month on our Reason Combinator Livestream, Mattias was demonstrating a Combinator feature when some cool music happened and Ryan decided spontaneously to turn it into a Remix Challenge. And he made a promise: if even just ONE person remixes Mattias’ music he would also make a remix to share with the Reason community. Well people did remix it and Ryan’s back with his own remix to keep his promise and to walk people through how he approached re-imagining Mattias’ original Combinator song.

Distortion as a Creative Effect and Song Starter! #Reason12

Learn more about Reason:

Home

Guitarists since the 1950s have known one of the most reliable creative tricks for writing riffs, hooks, and getting song ideas started: DISTORTION! And yet those of us who work primarily in DAWs and plugin instruments often overlook the creative potential of distortion when we’re trying to spark a new idea. Distortion is about embracing the unknown and the slightly out of control aspect of reshaping waveforms and introducing new harmonic overtones. But don’t let technical jargon make us miss the point. Distortion is often about just exploring, trying, and being surprised by the results we get – and that’s one of the best ways to arrive at new music.

In this video, Ryan will walk through a few different options and techniques for incorporating distortion into the creative process inside the Reason Rack.

Multiband Compression vs Dynamic EQ

Video by SoundID Reference via YouTube

Multiband Compression vs Dynamic EQ

Let’s take a look at Multiband Compressors versus Dynamic EQs

Compressors reduce the difference between the loud and soft elements to create a more even performance or a denser mix.

EQs change the frequency balance by adding or taking away energy in specific and flexible frequency ranges.

MB compressors divide the audio into different frequencies, which is never transparent. In fact, compressors always affect the tone in some way.

Dyn EQs simply transparently adjust the frequency content.

Dyn EQs can cut or boost, while only some MB compressors provide boost.

Here are some examples of when to use each:
– If a mix has too little bass, use a static EQ to turn up the low-frequency content.
– But if the bass has just one note that jumps out, a dynamic EQ can automatically lower the offensive note without affecting the tone of the entire sound.
– If a mix needs a little glue, we use a gentle full-range compressor.
– If the kick and bass don’t lock as well as they could, but the rest of the mix feels pretty good, multiband compression applied to just the low frequencies can solidify the low end without affecting the rest of the mix.
– For a boxy vocal, simply scooping the mids might make it thin all the time, but, a dynamic EQ can be set to reduce to the offending frequencies only when needed.

You may need to experiment a bit, but you’ll find places where dynamic eq and multiband compression each have their advantage.

When Ryan learned about the concept of pedal point chord progressions as a kid it changed the way he made music and so he’s introducing it to you if you’ve never tried it yet.
