Academy Of Tone #136: AMP1: the father of pedal amps and the evolution of the pedal amp business!

On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas goes back to the beginnings of BluGuitar as he tells the story of the evolution of the pedal amp.

Once a niche item among guitar players, the pedal amp really started becoming popular after 2014… when a certain AMP1 came on the scene! It’s not hard to see why so many companies now make pedal amps in a variety of analog and digital formats. They offer a whole bunch of advantages that full-size tube amps simply can’t match, the most obvious being their light weight and their supreme portability.

But pedal amps have also faced challenges as they sought to become accepted among the guitar world. Sure, they’re small, but that also means many people have questioned their power – are they loud enough to gig with?

Also, they wonder, can such a small amp ever sound and feel as good to play as a full-size tube amp head, with its large transformers and full-size tube contingent? Or is the BluGuitar AMP1 – with tis Nanotube and boutique tones to go – the only pedal amp which has yet achieved that goal? And… how to still look cool when you don’t have a full stack behind you on stage?!

On the show, Thomas will run through the whole fascinating story that started with his idea for a pedal-based amp, and ended up where it is today – an award-winning industry lightweight heavyweight loved by guitarists the world over for its convenience and boutique tones! Thomas will share his earliest thoughts and planning for AMP1 and the technology, and he’ll showcase some of his earliest prototype devices, alongside the key features (like a recording out) that he knew a successful pedal amp would need to have in.

We’ve also got a few A/B tests planned for the show, and what better than a comparison with the latest hot product in the pedal amp category: the Blackstar AMPED 1… which of course shares more than just a physical resemblance with AMP1 😉 Thomas will play the two and talk about the similarities and the differences, the tones and the features, their respective volumes (i.e. are they loud enough for the stage?), and explain what direction the pedal amp genre seems to be moving in.

This should be an exciting and fun show, and we’d also love to hear your suggestions for what you think are the best pedal amps out there – besides AMP1, of course 😉 Join us in the chat with your comments and we’ll discuss as many as we can during the show!
