Academy Of Tone #64: the long-awaited return of live gigs and the best AMP1 setups for playing them PLUS Thomas’ ’64 Strat!
On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas and Rich celebrate the return of the live concert to some parts of the world! Thomas was recently able to play his first shows in over a year, and this is definitely a step forward for music.
However, it brings about the question: what do you need to prepare and check for before you go on stage again? What are the best and most practical solutions for playing these shows in ‘the new normal’?
And, crucially, what’s the best rig for 2021 and beyond that will let you sound great and travel light? Enter the AMP1! Thomas and Rich will explain and demonstrate the options for building a new pedalboard based rig – featuring AMP1 on its own, and then adding a BluBOX – for stress-free shows.
There’s plenty of ways you can do this too: AMP1 with a micced cabinet, AMP1 with a cab as a stage monitor and using the amp’s Direct Out or the BluBOX, or just AMP1 and the amp’s Direct Out, or the BluBOX – no cab necessary! The guys will show the differences between these setups, and the advantages and disadvantages of all of them.
We’ll also throw in a few tips for getting back on stage and what you need to look out for, like setting up a 2nd Master volume on your rig for a solo boost, and Thomas has a bunch of practical advice as well: cleaning your guitar’s electronics and gear before the show, changing strings, checking all the cables, having spare strings and cables and picks, and more! We’ll cover as much as we can think of, and we want to hear your essential live tips too.
Finally, this is episode 64 of Academy of Tone, so what better excuse for Thomas to get out a prime example of a 1964 Fender Stratocaster and talk about it? It turns out 1964 was a pretty great year for Strats, as you’ll see and hear on the show…
