Academy Of Tone #65: Tone-chasing strategies for your own individual sound PLUS the tones of your guitar heroes!
On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas and Rich are tone chasing! Thomas has always placed a huge emphasis on personal tone, and finding your own sound with the guitar, and in this episode he explains his own tone chasing strategies, his tonal journey, and how he ended up finding the best sounds – for him.
Thomas will also discuss the way guitarists approach their own tones, and how it’s possible to set up your gear to take control of your sound. In particular, we’ll look at the different strategies employed by guitarists who actively use the volume and tone controls on their guitar, and those who don’t. These approaches require drastically different amplifier setups.
For example, Thomas dimes the gain on his AMP1 and rides the volume and tone controls for different amounts of dirt and dynamics – whereas Rich tends to play with the guitar ‘on 10’ the whole time, with overdrive pedals to add drive to his clean amp sound. The guys will plug into a selection of amps – AMP1 Mercury and Iridium Edition, a Hughes & Kettner TriAmp and an affordable surprise amp – to find ‘their’ sounds, and Thomas will showcase the differences between the following strategies:
– Riding the volume on the guitar vs gain on the amp
– Using the tone control on the guitar vs the tone stack on the amp
– Gain settings on the amp vs overdrive pedals
In the second half of the show, Thomas is tone chasing the guitar heroes! He’ll do two case studies on this: the first will cover Mark Knopfler and his super-clean, quacky Strat/Fender Twin tones. The second will focus on the Les Paul/Marshall sounds of Foreigner’s Mick Jones.
