On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas is joined by special guest Max Carton to talk all things versatile guitars – and to check out Max’s killer new pedalboard build!
Regular Academy of Tone viewers will know Max as being one of our resident AC/DC experts, and the guys will of course spend plenty of time talking about AC/DC in this show… but we’re also moving Max out of that comfort zone and pushing the musical borders a bit wider!
Guitarists often talk about having one guitar that can play anything and cover all bases. Most would say that such an instrument doesn’t exist, but Thomas and Max are testing that out in detail this episode!
Max is bringing his trusty modded Gibson Les Paul to represent the humbucker community, and of course Thomas will be rocking his beloved – and also much modded over the years – ‘61 Fender Strat. Can one of these guitars really cover all bases, from jazz and pop to rock and downtuned modern metal? That’s what we’re going to find out!
In the second half of the show, Max shows us around his wonderful new pedalboard build. Based around a BluGuitar AMP1 Mercury Edition and a GigRig G3 Effects Pedal Switching System, this is truly a setup that’ll get Max through any gig.
Using the Mercury edition for the core tones, Max also has a bunch of pedals hooked up to the system. For different flavors of drive he has a fuzz pedal or two, a Mooer Pure Boost and a Horizon Devices Precision Drive. He also has a Line 6 Helix HX Stomp modeler, which he has hooked up via the 4-cable method in order to make use of both pre and post effects.
All this is hooked up via the G3 – which is a looper switcher with full MIDI capabilities – and gives Max a relatively simple yet incredibly flexible setup. The HX Stomp is also run through the Mercury Edition’s FX Loop in parallel mode, which means the sonic qualities of all the tones are at their maximum, while also meaning his signal chain remains analog when the digital FX are not active.
