Today’s guest/expert is Mike Avenaim…a Los Angeles-based musical director, drummer, producer, composer, and mixer. He really does it all…and does it all pretty damn well. He’s worked with Scott Weiland, Lil Nas X, Tori Kelly, Hailee Steinfield, Nick Lachey, Leslie Odom Jr. and tons more. We discuss the incorrect use of compression styles, misunderstanding routing, mono vs stereo, gain staging and much more. While I usually like to keep these short, Mike is a treasure trove of knowledge and I was happy to let him unload. Because of this, I am splitting our conversation into two episodes…so please enjoy part one.
This episode is also sponsored by Waves Audio. This podcast would take me soooo much longer to edit if it wasn’t for the Waves Vocal Rider plugin. It "rides" the fader in real-time and keeps both my and my guest’s audio at a consistent level without the need to overcompress. I also use an endless of amount of their plugins for my musical recordings such as Abbey Road Saturator, CLA Drums, the SSL Channel, and many more. We are an affiliate member of Waves and if you purchase any Waves plugin via the link below, you directly support the show and me.

On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas is joined by special guest Mick Woll of URBAN CLUB BAND – one of Europe’s leading Top 40 covers bands. Mick has been using AMP1 ever since it came out for all the clean sounds he could ever need, and as the ultimate pedal platform. Together, Thomas and Mick discover the best ways to get incredible pristine clean sounds from AMP1, and discuss how to turn your amp into the perfect pedal platform.
The guys also discuss Mick’s funk and jazz background, and his long and distinguished bandleader career playing huge events with the likes of Nelly, Cassandra Steen, Dante Thomas, Boss Hoss, Ollie Gabriel, Chris Thompson, Karl Brazil, Gerry Grainger, Steve Stevens, Gregor Meyle, Mikkey D, Thorsten de Winkel, Billy Cobham, and more!
PLUS, Thomas and Mick are both massive fans of EP – Echoplex – preamps. The guys investigate the magic of the EP design, and play a bunch of pedals that aim to replicate the hallowed EP tones.

DuncanCantDie is a professional Twitch streamer and YouTuber, and over the last five years he’s been tweaking his streaming rig to achieve the perfect setup. In this video, Duncan shows off his streaming gear and talks about his favorite Blue microphones.
At the beginning of his streaming career, Duncan used a Blue Yeti to deliver clear, detailed sound on stream. Since then, he’s upgraded to the new Yeti X and loves experimenting with the customizable sound profiles and vocal effects.
Next, Duncan leveled up to the Baby Bottle SL; a cardioid condenser microphone that delivers classic sound and incredible versatility. After years of searching, Duncan upgraded again to a Blue Mouse condenser microphone. Ideal for pro voice over work, Mouse delivers a smooth, crisp sound with powerful low-end.

First it is played at 100% with full band, then slowed down to 50% (drums only), sped up a bit to 70% (drums only), then a bit more to 90% (drums only) and finally again to 100% (drums only).

This week’s guest is Ben Barter…an Auckland-born, Los Angeles-based drummer/producer/storyteller and ex-dishwasher to the STARS. Ben has one of my favorite pockets and tastes in ‘groove’ so I was SUPER pumped to get him on the show. He’s played every major festival you can think of and has done all the talk shows. He’s the nicest bloke in the world and I know you’ll be smiling the whole time you listen to this one. Cheers!
