South Windsor, CT, October 2021 – Alt Rock favorites Toad The Wet Sprocket dropped in at TELEFUNKEN headquarters in Connecticut during their recent tour. The band filmed three songs for the company’s “Live From The Lab” series and tried out TELEFUNKEN’s new 2022 TEC Award-nominated TF11 FET condenser mics on guitars, in addition to performing with their stock of M80 dynamic mics for vocals.

Founder, lead singer and multi-instrumentalist Glen Philips commented on the M80 vocal mics, “Our soundman has been switching me from mic to mic over the last few years, trying out some of the top brands in the market, but this year he brought out the M80 and we’re loving it – it’s totally responsive to my mic technique and he’s been using a fraction of the EQ he used to use. It’s a great mic, really clear in my ear, and he likes the bleed better when I step away.”

The band’s FOH engineer John Edman explained, “I’ve been working with Toad The Wet Sprocket and Glen Phillips for the last 5 years and this year I introduced the M80 for Glen to try out at rehearsals for the current tour we’re on and I received positive feedback from Glen. For starters, I didn’t need to EQ like before and I also found that the bottom was natural sounding and smoother with less of a proximity rise. The M80s off axis leakage sounded very natural, as if the mic had an omni quality to it without it being omni. A great mic for a great voice.”

The new album “Starting Now” is available and the current tour continues through the end of October. https://toadthewetsprocket.com/

HOW TO: Change a tube in a TELEFUNKEN AR-51 microphone

HOW TO: Change a tube in a TELEFUNKEN AR-51 microphone

PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK! Tube microphones are fragile and can carry ‘shock-worthy’ voltages. We are not responsible for the well-being of you or your microphone. Please read all written instructions before proceeding!

BEFORE YOU START:

Turn off your power supply and disconnect it from the power outlet.

Disconnect the microphone from the tube microphone cable and power supply. We recommend leaving the microphone unplugged for at least an hour before starting.

We strongly recommend wearing rubber gloves, like in the video! Grease from your fingers can impact the operation of your microphone.

If you are uncomfortable with doing this, please contact us. You can always send your microphone in to us to have the tube changed.

USE ONLY ECC81 / 12AT7 TUBE TYPE FOR REPLACEMENT

Hold the microphone by the body tube, and remove the base ring by turning it counterclockwise until unthreaded.

Slide off the body tube.

Place the base ring and body tube aside.

Lay the microphone flat on a surface, and grip the tube socket with one hand and the tube damper with the other.

Gently pull on the tube while rocking it back and forth to loosen it, if necessary. Be careful not to bend the pins.

Slide the tube out from between the side rails by the damper.

Remove the damper from the tube and place it aside.

Position the tube damper near the center on your new tube.

Locate the gap in holes on the tube socket and in the pins of the new tube. Use one hand to angle the tube socket towards you and insert the new tube, lining up the gaps.

Press the tube flush to the socket, and carefully push the tube back between the side rails, as the damper secures it.

Locate the notch on the top plate and the notch on the body tube. Slide the body tube back over the microphone, lining up the notches.

Tightly fasten the base ring back on the microphone.

The narration for this video was recorded using the exact mic you saw in the video, a TELEFUNKEN AR-51.

USE ONLY ECC81 / 12AT7 TUBE TYPE FOR REPLACEMENT
