Chapter three of “What Makes a Cartridge Good?” delves into the power of materials used in the different parts of a cartridge and their significant impact on its performance.
The chapter covers the following:
1) Cartridge Housing, the interface between the magnetic system and the tonearm/headshell, is an essential element in the cartridge’s performance. Leif Johannsen discusses the different benefits of the materials used in cartridge housings.
2) The Magnetic System is where the movement of the stylus and the cantilever is transformed into an electrical signal. You’ll learn about the Neodymium Magnets and their high energy density.
3) The Rubber Suspension system is the interface between the stationary part of the magnetic system and the moving part in the cartridge, as it plays a vital role in the performance of the cartridge. Leif Johannsen demonstrates the differences in the damping properties of the rubber, and you’ll get a look inside the Ortofon Rubber Facility in Nakskov.
4) The Armature is the moving part of the cartridge. In Moving Coil Cartridges, this includes the armature with the coils wrapped on it, placed right next to the rubber suspension system. In the Moving Magnet cartridges, the moving part is the cantilever, with the magnet on the other side of the rubber suspension. Common for both cartridge principles is that the coil wire is used to flavor the sound.
5) Finally, Leif Johannsen dives into different types of Cantilevers. The cantilever is responsible for translating the vibrations of the stylus into an electrical signal. You’ll learn about the various materials used for cantilevers, including aluminum, boron, and diamond.
